Bus Drivers Post Rates In Three Languages

In an effort to ensure that commuters are aware of the existing bus fares and the 'pay-as-you-enter' system when using public transportation, the Bus Drivers Association has agreed to post the new fare structure on their busses in three languages. This was agreed during a meeting between the Association and Transportation Commissioner Louie Laveist.

Laveist said posting the fares in three languages will be done as part of a public awareness campaign to ensure that all commuters are aware of the new fare system.

All busses operating on the Dutch side are required to post the new fare structure which went into effect on November 1, 2007, on their busses as of 14.April 2008.

The Executive Council has issued an official fare structure to the BDA in English outlining the hew fare structure and also informing commuters that they should pay as they enter to avoid any discrepancies. Bus Association President Jose Slac said some bus drivers had been charging below the new fares, which was causing some major problems for other drivers who were charging the correct fares. He underscored the importance of all drivers applying the pay-as-you-enter system to avoid problems.

During the meeting, Laveist underscored the importance of adhering to the new system. The Commissioner also urged the association to get independent bus drivers on board so that they too would comply. He said bus drivers who are not members of BDA are also subject to this regulation and are urged to pick up a copy of the fare structure at the General Affairs Office of the Island Government and post it in their buses before April 14.
