Marine Trades suggests a new rate structure to Government

The island government should introduce an improved fee structure for the marine industry that doesn't drive away business but allows for more growth and revenues of this sector, says St. Maarten Marine Trades Association (SMTA).

This suggestion was made by the association in a meeting Friday with Island Government representatives Commissioners Sarah Wescot-Williams and Louie Laveist and Island Councilman Leroy de Weever.

During the meeting the SMTA representatives handed over a proposal to counter the high port, bridge and other fees that were imposed on the marine sector in November.

SMTA members Robbie Ferron and Michael Ferrier represented the marine industry which accounts for ten per cent of the St. Maarten's economic activities.

Ferron told The Daily Herald the fees had been implemented without any proper consultation and research as to how they would affect this important and growing sector. He noted that the high fees will not affect many yacht and boat businesses this season because many owners and captains had already booked their stays before the fees were introduced.

St. Maarten Marine Trades Association (SMTA) Ferron said the government representatives were told that, if a solution to better structure the fee to maximise revenues and not overburden the yachtsmen is not reached soon, the island will lose business. This loss will be experienced despite St. Maarten's advantages as a duty free port with modern amenities.
